Green Infrastructure Projects Overview
This packet describes the scope and status of the Sewer System Improvement Program’s (SSIP) eight Early Implementation Stormwater Management Projects. The eight demonstration projects in each one of San Francisco’s urban watersheds were developed to assist the SFPUC in evaluating the performance of various green technologies in removing stormwater from the City's combined sewer system. The lessons learned from their implementation will also help streamline project planning, design, and construction processes for future green infrastructure projects.

Phase One of the Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP), will construct, monitor and evaluate eight green infrastructure projects to manage stormwater before it enters our combined sewer system in each of San Francisco's eight urban watersheds.
These green infrastructure concepts were identified in part through a series of participatory planning workshops held by the SFPUC in 2007 and 2009 as part of the Urban Watershed Assessment. Learn about green infrastructure performance and the monitoring program here.
The following green infrastructure projects are currently underway:
Project will create new plazas, improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, and manage stormwater with rain gardens and permeable pavement.
Project will improve stormwater management, walking, and biking conditions along the iconic Wiggle route.
Project will manage stormwater and create pedestrian community focused areas in Chinatown Alleys.
Project will include over 80 rain gardens to manage stormwater along a two mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard.
Project will manage stormwater through permeable pavement and green bulbouts and improve the street experience.
Project will create a new creek replicating the historic Yosemite Creek and manage flows from McLaren Park.
Project will feature two distinct locations creating a mini-plaza on Sunnydale Ave and terraced rain gardens on Leland Ave.
Project will use green infrastructure near Baker Beach to improve stormwater management.
Continuing to Green San Francisco
As we upgrade our aging combined sewer system, we will integrate a mix of green and grey infrastructure projects to manage stormwater and improve our sewer system. Green Infrastructure Projects will implement green technologies over the next few years while the Urban Watershed Assessment will identify green and grey sewer improvements through a long term planning process over the next twenty years.
