San Francisco, CA— San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) General Manager Harlan L. Kelly, Jr. will be inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni for the University of California, Berkeley’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
“The education I received at Cal Berkeley played an absolutely critical role in helping me become the person I am today,” said Kelly. “I have many fond memories of attending school at Cal and learning from some of the finest engineering minds in the country. It is an honor to be recognized by an institution that I respect so greatly, and a privilege to be included in an alumni group with so many successful, accomplished and driven individuals.”
Kelly received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1986. From 1984 – 2003, he was employed by the San Francisco Department of Public Works, beginning as a Student Trainee and culminating with his appointment to City Engineer in 1996. In 2015, he received a Silver Spur Award for Excellence in Public Service and in 2012, he was honored with a Heroes and Hearts Award for Community Service from San Francisco General Hospital. He also co-founded the youth internship program Project Pull, an initiative committed to diversifying the City’s workforce by providing mentoring and paid work experience to local youth.
“Election to the Academy involves an extremely rigorous and confidential nomination, vetting, and election process,” said Dr. Rudolph Bonaparte, Chair of the Academy Board of Directors. “Harlan Kelly’s career accomplishments and civic service were compelling, and his nomination was enthusiastically endorsed by the membership. We are delighted by his election and welcome him into the Academy.”
Kelly is set to be inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni today, along with nine other Cal-Berkeley alumni, two of whom will be receiving the honor posthumously. Among those being honored is Susan Leal, who was former General Manager of the SFPUC, from 2004 to 2009.
In 2012, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering established the Academy of Distinguished Alumni. The objectives of the academy are to honor the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of school alumni, increase the visibility of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and present role models for current students.
