The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park has restored a scow schooner called the Alma. This ship was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1988, in recognition of this kind of ship’s role in the development of the San Francisco region. The Alma was built in 1891 at Hunters Point. It is now docked at the end of Hyde Street Pier. Visitors to the Park can arrange to go sailing on this piece of San Francisco history.
